MARGAO: Police made their presence felt once again in communally sensitive Rumdamol Housing Board Colony on Tuesday ~ nearly five years after the same locality was rocked by violence over a dispute between members of the majority and minority communities.

Even as the district administration lifted away the Shivaji statue from the Rumdamol Panchayat’s children park around Tuesday noon, the men-in-uniform were maintaining a close vigil to avert any untoward incident.

Police drawn from the Quepem and Canacona sub-divisions were patrolling the sensitive areas of the Housing Board ~ not taking any chances over the situation arising out of the installation and subsequent removal of the statue of Shivaji from the children’s park. “Around 30 police personnel are maintaining strict vigil in the locality. Patrolling will continue over the next few days,” informed Maina-Curtorim Police station in-charge, PI Gurudas Kadam.

On June 27, 2008, the Rumdamol Housing Board was rocked by violence after members of the two communities clashed over a petty issue. The violence had its echo in the commercial capital after members of the Bajrang Dal targeted business establishments of the minority community.
