BICHOLIM: Bicholim deputy collector has received a petition to provide protection to award-winning teacher and environmentalist Ramesh Gauns.
It may be recalled that some associations related to mining last week carried out a huge rally against Gawas stating that the environmentalist was involved in some illegal activities, even as Gawas has denied the same.
On Monday, Rajendra Kerkar, Dadu Mandrekar, Jawahar Barve, Bhaii Desai, Kalidas Umarye, journalist Sandesh Prabhudesai, Kashinath Mayekar, ARS Chief Amrut Singh, Gopal Morajkar, Naresh Kadkade and Santosh Gaonkar submitted a memorandum to the Bicholim deputy collector and the police. The memorandum stressed on the seriousness of the issue. Environmentalist and an ideal award winning teacher, Gawas, should be given police protection in the wake of ‘deadly warning’ given to him, the memo stated. Expressing their support, the memorandum claimed that all the environmentalists and other segments are fully behind Gawas. Dy Collector Pradeep Naik assured to look into the matter.
