PANJIM: To check incidents of drunk and driving cases, the Goa Police Traffic Cells have decided to conduct surprise checks, especially during night hours, in every traffic cell particularly in South Goa district.
Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Akshat Kaushal said, “Almost on a daily basis surprise checks against drunken driving will be organised in every traffic cell in South Goa. The drive will continue till January 1, 2024. It will be conducted during night hours.”
The IPS officer said the traffic police will be conducting the drive in close coordination with the district police. “District police and traffic police are working together in this regard,” he said. SP Kaushal informed that since January this year so far nearly 1,700 traffic challans have been issued for drunken driving across the State.
“Traffic police will be deployed during late night hours to do surprise checks on drunken driving. Traffic Police are coordinating with district police to make the drive more effective. Alcometers have been provided to all traffic cells for the successful conduct of the drive. Additional staff has been given to the Traffic Cells of Vasco, Margao and Porvorim,” SP Kaushal said.
The officer informed that 135 vehicles have been impounded in the drive against misuse of rent-a-car and rent-a-bikes.
“We have 135 vehicles impounded by traffic police in a nearly month-long drive against misuse of rent-a-car and rent-a-bike at the same time awareness regarding responsible driving among the tourists is being spread,” SP Kaushal said.
