QUEPEM: Due to people’s complaints, the Xeldem panchayat has cleared the Tilamol ground of the rubbish, including broken bottles. Additionally, Quepem police have reportedly promised to patrol the ground at night following an outcry by villagers over the wrongdoings on the ground, via social media.
Former panchayat member Amey Chimulkar, alleged that the Tilamol ground is being misused by some unscrupulous elements for the last many months. He accused the Xeldem panchayat of turning a blind eye to this misuse.
He said illegal activities were happening on the ground a few nights ago and pointed out that the ground has become a hazardous place for people, not only to play, but even for those who come for their regular walks.
“Empty alcohol bottles, some of them broken, are found all over the ground and this is very dangerous for people using the ground for the purpose it is meant for,” Chimulkar said.
While cautioning that the rowdy elements, who misuse the ground at night might turn their ire on the people living nearby, he asked the panchayat to take cognisance of this imminent threat to the people.
“It is truly unfortunate that at present, the ground has become a haven for illegal activities such as gambling and romancing,” he added.
Tilamol resident, Rocky Fernandes, lamented that malpractices can be seen happening even on the road beside the ground. “It is quite difficult to pass on this raod and it sends a very bad message to the community besides instilling fear in people,” Rocky said.
While demanding an immediate stop to these unwanted activities, he said the youth would be adversely affected and asked the police to take stringent action against the wrongdoers.
Xeldem Sarpanch Kavita Gauns while lamenting that Amey’s wife, Meenakshi despite being a member of the panchayat did not raise up this issue with her, said the mess on the ground is now cleared. “We have also written to Quepem police to look into the matter,” she said.
Panchayat secretary Palash Bhemere, added that police will start patrolling the ground from Wednesday onwards.
