Political leaders extend support to farmers

Mapusa: Various political party leaders reached Mapusa Police station to extend their support to the farmers fighting for their rights in Mopa. The party leaders condemned the government for taking steps to go ahead with demarcation and detaining farmers opposing the proposed link road and demanded not to go ahead with road without taking farmers into confidence.

Goa Forward Party leader Kiran Kandolkar said, “Acquisition of land for Mopa project is going since last 20 years however despite acquiring lakhs of square meter of land still the government wants to acquire land for the road. On one side the Government is trying to acquire land of farmers while on the other the Prime Minister is asking farmers to be self-sufficient under Aatma Nibhar but in Pernem, government is trying to destroy agriculture land”

Aam Adami Party Goa leader Rahul Mhambre said,”Villagers had clearly told the government and local MLA about their stand on not giving their land for this proposed link road despite that in presence of police force, attempts were made to conduct survey which is condemnable.

MGP President Deepak Dhavalikar who also visited the farmers said,” Despite the Melaulim incident, government is still forcing this project on the people. Government is aware that if villagers come together nothing can happen, so I request the government to take villagers into confidence before going ahead. Government is trying to acquire land without intimating the owner’s. Market rates should be given to farmers and should first hold discussion with farmers and then go ahead. Government should not try to do Gadagiri with villagers” Dhavalikar added.

“Local villagers while using their right have objected to survey of their land” said Adv Prasad Shahpurkar.
