MARGAO: Goans for Dabolim Only on Wednesday said that Goan politicians of all hues should show their commitment to the interests of their people and come out clearly, unambiguously and publicly for the scrapping of the unwarranted and unviable second airport at Mopa.
“Both Congress as well as BJP politicians who are calling for a decision on Mopa at a later stage are just biding their time until the 2014 Parliamentary elections, after which they will go full speed ahead with this anti-Goan Mopa airport project that will spell disaster for the economy of Goa. It is high time all Goan politicians, irrespective of party affiliations remember that they have been elected to serve the interests of the State and its people, and not to promote vested interests,” stated GFDO Convenor Fr Eremito Rebello.
He said the people of Goa are watching and monitoring closely the stand of various political parties, MLAs and MPs on this vexed airport issue and there is absolutely no doubt that this will be uppermost on the agenda in the forthcoming elections.
GFDO appreciated the fact that Goa AICC General Secretary Luizinho Faleiro has taken the time and the effort to gain an in depth understanding of the deeper issues involved in the two airport policy started by the Congress government and now being actively promoted by the Parrikar-led BJP government. “As Faleiro has rightly understood and admitted, once the proposed Mopa airport comes up, there will be absolutely no possibility for Dabolim airport to survive,” Fr Eremito said, adding that it was very heartening that Luizinho Faleiro had put the interests of his people above political expediency and shown the courage of his convictions in speaking out openly against a policy started by his very own party, once he was convinced that it was against the interests of Goa and Goans.
Fr Eremito, however, said it is extremely disappointing that the State’s Members of Parliament, namely Francisco Sardinha, Shripad Naik and Shantaram Naik have failed to display any initiative to safeguard the interests of Goa by engaging with the relevant authorities in Delhi to scrap this unwanted two airport policy for tiny Goa.
