Politicos become cheerleaders of ‘dhirios’ as elections loom

Legalise ‘dhirio’ in Goa, demands South Goa MP

MARGAO: South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Friday demanded that the State government should legalise ‘dhirio’ in Goa in view of the verdict of the Supreme Court regarding Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu (TN), another form of bullfighting.

Clearly, when Dhirios are in the ring, election-bound politicians sing.

‘Dhirio’ is a traditional sport in Goa and demanded that State government should pass legislation in assembly to legalise them as they have the powers to do so, just as the TN government has shown the way,” said the MP.

Like most Goan issues, the matter of ‘dhirios’ hasn’t quite resonated in the highest platform of democracy via the MP. But with 2024 general elections lying ahead, ‘dhirios’ will have many cheerleaders.

The MP opined that bullfighting does not amount to the cruelty of animals and sarcastically added that if bullfighting is considered to be cruel, the fighting between humans as a sport should be banned too.
