MARGAO: Around 400 people involved in the election work led by Collector Ajit Roy and accompanied by Election observers walked from the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex to the old Collectorate building after going around the Margao Municipal Garden.
The 40 minute walkathon undertaken under the title Kartavya was to educate the people on their right to vote and motivate them to go to the polling both to exercise their franchise. “We keep telling the people to vote for their own good and future as there is no point in complaining of bad roads if you do not vote in the first place,” said Ajit Roy talking to media persons.
Election Commission appointed observers Indra Malho, Monalisa Goswami, Suchitra Sinha and Aparajita Sharma participated in the walkathon where participants were given white or yellow or red-colour T-shirts and a white cap.
Three icons, Marianela Dias, John D’Silva and Agostinho Fernandes addressed the participants at the old collectorate where they asked people not only to ask their neighbours to go to vote but to ask every person they meet to show the proof that he or she has voted.
All participants kept saying they would try and get 100 per cent voting in South Goa. However, the returning officer admitted that was not possible given the fact that there are many registered voters who are working overseas and will not be able to participate in the voting process.
