PANJIM: Faced with controversies and opposition, the BJP-led government is not keen on holding major events in the State this year as elections are approaching.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, expressing unhappiness over the people’s approach on government events, said, “I want to hold events like Maritime India Summit in Goa but worried about people and NGO opposition. This year being election year, I don’t want to hold any such events,” he told media persons on Friday evening.
“This is election year so we should not invite new problems during this time so we better take the mandate first and then we will do or else good initiatives are spoilt. NGOs will keep on objecting to it,” he added.
The State government had to face severe criticism and protests during the four-day DefExpo last month, organized by the Union Defence Ministry in South Goa. The protestors had even approached the High Court seeking a stay on the event, the petition was disposed by the court. The Union government is now set to hold the BRICS Summit in Goa in October this year.
Meanwhile, responding to a question, the Chief Minister said there is no water crisis in the State except for a few isolated patches, where attempts are being made to supply water. “The water situation in Goa is good except for a few parts. There are some isolated areas where we might have water shortage but all attempts are being made to tide over the crisis,” he said.
He said that there are some parts in Bardez taluka where the water crisis may prevail but supply is made from Sal to Assnora water treatment plant.
