VASCO: Polling to elect MLAs from all four constituencies of Mormugao taluka was held peacefully on Saturday with higher voter turnout as against that in the last assembly elections.
A high voter turnout of 79.60 percent was recorded in Mormugao constituency, followed by 76.58 percent voting in Dabolim, 76.44 percent voting in Cortalim and lowest was in Vasco constituency with 70.96 voting.
Mormugao taluka has 1,00,961 voters spread across four constituencies –Mormugao, Vasco Dabolim and Cortalim – and of whom 78,581 exercised their franchise on Saturday. The total voting percentage of Mormugao taluka was 71.46. Interestingly, in all four constituencies, female voter turnout was little higher than the male voters.
In Mormugao, out of total 21,422 voters, only 17,071 voted for their candidates — 8,476 men and 8,595 women. A very high voter turnout was recorded in the part number 7 (areas in and around Headland Sada junction) with 90.37 percent voting, while part number 3 (near Ambedkar vocational centre) recorded lowest with only 60.07 percent electorate exercising their franchise.
Similarly, in Dabolim constituency, out of 22,478 voters, only 17,214 (8,378 men and 8836 men) voted. A high voter turnout was recorded in part number 3 (in and around the areas of Rastroli Mata temple in New Vaddem of Dabolim) with 87.57 percent voting, while lowest voting was recorded in part number 18 (parts of Alto Chicalim).
In Vasco constituency, out of the 35,601 voters only 21,011 voted (10,503 males and 10,508 females).
Part number 22 (Driver hill/Mestawada) recorded highest voting with 81.18 percent voters exercising their franchise, while part number 30 (Varunapuri naval area) remained lowest with 29.06 percent voting. Surprisingly the naval staff this time did not come out in large number to vote for their candidate in Vasco assembly seat.
In Cortalim, out of total 30,460 voters only 23,285 voted (11,079 men and 12,206 women). Part number 4 (Sindolim and neighbouring areas) witnessed highest turnout of voters with 89.18 percent votes, and part number 16 (BITS Pilani campus in Sancoale) witnessed lowest voters turnout with only 25.60 percent voting. It is learnt that due to ongoing exams at BITS Pilani campus many students did not come out to take part in the voting held on Saturday.
