MARGAO: Deputy Collector, Margao Sangeeta Naik has sealed Ms Seahath Canning Company, located at the Nessai Industrial Estate at Sao Jose de Areal.
The sealing comes against the backdrop of directions issued by the Goa State Pollution Control Board. The Deputy Collector told Herald that the company was sealed on Friday as per the District Collector’s instructions.
The GSPCB had carried out inspection of the unit following a complaint received by the President of Scheduled Tribe Association, Sao Jose de Areal, Pedro Castanha, who contended the a water pond has been contaminated by the discharge of waste water from the fish canning factory.
Inspection of the unit by the GSPCB revealed that the effluent treatment plant (ETP) was no in operation, while a pump was found installed to empty the collection tank of the ETP into a septic tank of Ms Tin Pack cans. The inspection report further revealed that domestic waste water was flowing into the adjacent drains, while stating that the overall conditions in the premises were unhygienic.
During the inspection, village Sarpanch Julio Monteiro informed that the unit was discharging foul smelling process waste water in the adjacent storm water drain which eventually empties into the pond located near the Panchayat office and further into the fields. He also informed that this was generally done during the heavy rains to minimise the detection of the discharge.
