Pollution Board directs 32 star hotels over bio-waste plants

PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board on Wednesday issued directions to 32 starred hotels to immediately install bio degradable waste disposal plant, failing which action would be initiated against them.

PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board on Wednesday issued directions to 32 starred hotels to immediately install bio degradable waste disposal plant, failing which action would be initiated against them.
The three and five star hotels were found to be functioning in violation of the provisions of the Consent to Operate under Water Act. 
The Board has directed all the hotels to immediately stop sending their waste to piggeries and to maintain detail records of quantity of waste generated at the hotel and the amount which is treated. The hotels have been asked to submit the compliance report within next seven days failing which stringent legal action would be initiated. 
The consent granted to various hotels under Water Act specifies that ‘the applicant should install facility for converting bio-degradable waste generated from the hotel to compost so as to meet the standards of compost prescribed in the municipal solid waste (management and handling) rules, 2000.’
The GSPCB, last week conducted inspection of 56 starred hotels after it was noticed that the hotels were reportedly asking piggeries to take away the surplus food. 
GSPCB Chairman Jose Manual Noronha said that during inspection of hotels, it was observed that that though they have installed the machinery
