Pollution Board to monitor removal of Princess

Two officers of the Goa State Pollution Control Board will monitor the exercise of cutting of the grounded vessel off Candolim beach. The North Goa Collect Mihir Vardhan has asked GSPCB to depute its two staff at the site of the vessel -- M V River Princess during the process of breaking the vessel, sources said.

The North Goa Collector made the suggestion following M/s Arihant Ship Breakers, a Mumbai based company which has been engaged by the government to break the grounded vessel, gave a detailed presentation as to how the vessel would be cut.
The government is taking extra measures to ensure that there is no further damage to the already degraded beach as a result of the grounded vessel.
The representative of the company has informed the government that toxic waste that would be generated because of cutting operation will be taken care of.
It is learnt that Customs notification notifying Britona jetty as cutoms point has been issued and the government has been asked to pay a Customs duty of Rs 3.94 crore.
The government is now free to sign an agreement with the company and issue work order.
