Ponda all set for a high voltage Municipal Council poll battle on May 5

Several established candidates are facing heat from educated new entrants

PONDA: The door-to-door campaigning for Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) election, which was at its peak since past few days, ended on Wednesday and now the entire focus is on the high voltage electoral battle scheduled on May 5.

Some highly qualified young candidates pose serious challenge to former councillors contesting the election.

The PMC is 15 member Council and already two councillors have been elected unopposed from Ward 7 and Ward 13. The election will be held for the remaining 13 Wards, with total 43 candidates in the fray.

Though this election is not on party lines, the political parties formed their panels and hopes winning their candidates.

Many new candidates contesting without any backing of political parties are also hopeful for victory. The main political parties and their leaders campaigned for their candidates and seem confident of winning.

The focus of Pondaites is on two high voltage battles in two wards where sons of a senior political leader in State are facing tough challenge from rival candidates. Winning this electoral battle is very crucial for them if they are to contest Assembly election in future.

Similarly daughters of former male councillors are also in the fray after their wards got reserved for ladies.

While at some wards there is straight contest between two candidates, in some wards a tough contest is expected as multiple candidates are in the running.
