PONDA: Following the ouster of MGP supported Pradeep Naik as Ponda municipal chairman two week ago, the DMA has convened special a meeting on August 29 at 11.30 am at the Council Hall to elect a new civic chief.
Geetali Talavlikar and Veerendra Dhavlikar from MGP, and Venktesh Naik from BJP have filed nomination for the post of municipal chairperson. According to sources, Venktesh Naik has a better chance of winning the post.
In the 15-member Ponda Municipal Council, five are affiliated to BJP, 7 to MGP and 3 to Congress. The municipal election was held in May last year and MGP supported Pradeep Naik was made chairperson with support of BJP councillors.
However, with new political developments and the dropping of former PWD minister Sudin Dhavalikar from the Cabinet, the MGP lost its hold over the Ponda municipal politics.
With five members, BJP is trying to form the council with the support of some Congress and MGP councillors.
