PONDA: In a swift action, Ponda Police on Sunday cracked the gruesome double murder case within 24 hours by nabbing the accused Mahadev Ghadi, a resident of Bayem, Surla.
It may be recalled that two sisters, 68-year-old Jeevan Kamat, a retired nurse of the Goa Medical College (GMC) and her sister 76-year-old Mangala Kamat were found lying in a pool of blood in their flat, located in heart of the town. The bodies were found in the kitchen with multiple injuries.
The police on Sunday disclosed that the 34-year-old Surla resident was charged with double murder and was remanded to four days police custody.
Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Singh said, “Mahadev confessed to the double murder. He had borrowed a loan of Rs 2.5 lakh from Jeevan a year ago. Since she was persistently demanding that he return the loan amount, Mahadev visited her flat to discuss the loan issue on Saturday. However, there were heated arguments between Mahadev and Jeevan wherein the accused committed her murder with a weapon found in the kitchen, and when elder sister Mangala rushed to her rescue, the accused also killed her. The weapon used in the double murder and blood-stained clothes of accused have been recovered.”
SP Singh said, “Employed as an operator in a company at Verna, the accused was staying in one the flats in the same building while the victims were residing on the first floor. He was known to the victims for the last ten years and used to visit them.”
The police said the accused, a native of Karnataka, has been residing in Goa for over a decade. They further said Ghadi was into gambling and had the habit of borrowing money.
The police said Mangala’s son Pritesh Kamat, who resides on second floor, had gone out to bring milk for his mother and aunt. However, when Pritesh saw the door open, he and his wife went inside and were shocked to see both his mother and aunt lying dead in a pool of blood. He immediately informed the Ponda Police.
SP Singh said, “During the course of investigations, several teams were formed and tasked to build specific leads. Several persons were interrogated and combing and search operations of the entire area were conducted. Verification of antecedent of migrants and all persons connected to the victims’ family was held.”
The CCTV footage of in and around of place of offence was checked. After verifying the cell phone details Mahadev was apprehended.
The case was cracked by PI Ponda Mohan Gaude and his team under the supervision of SP Pankaj Kumar Singh and DySP Nelson Albuquerque and Uday Parab.
