PONDA: Indiscriminate garbage dumping along the roads in Ponda has angered the residents who have demanded strict action against the culprits.
Due to garbage dumping, the Ponda bypass, the road leading to KTC bus stand, and the one between Dhonkamb Kavlem and Durbhat, besides many other roads have become an eyesore. Even the roads in the panchayats neighbouring the Ponda town have not been spared.
The garbage mostly consist of plastic, food packed in plastic, construction debris and discarded household goods.
Some concerned citizens said that garbage is dumped along the roads mostly at night. They are angst that unscrupulous elements continue to dump garbage along the roads despite filing numerous complaints with the Ponda police in this regard.
The locals have now demanded increased police patrolling, especially at night, to keep those dumping garbage at bay.
When contacted, Kavlem Sarpanch Rajesh Kavlekar and Bandora Sarpanch Ramchandra Naik acknowledged dumping of garbage within their panchayat jurisdiction. However, they said that it was not by the villagers, but people who travel through their villages. “Outsiders passing through the village in vehicles throw the garbage wrapped in plastic along the road,” said Naik.
Both the sarpanchs said that they have system to collect wet and dry garbage.
