Ponda: While it has not been easy for people to procure their essential supplies during the ongoing lockdown period, Ponda locals are upset with the high prices of fish as well as other items like vegetables.
Vishal Phadte, a businessman reasoned that such situations create more anxiety amongst families given that they have limited savings and there are uncertainties regarding their source of income.
“Fish is consumed by many but the prices should be reasonable,” he said while adding that people are buying it anyways as those who won’t it, don’t have any other option.
On another note, there have also been demands for opening of liquor stores and to ensure that prices are not increased amid allegations that sale of liquor has been taking place behind closed doors and illegally.
Shivaji Naik said that lockdown has snatched their wages and livelihoods and thus many have resorted to consumption of liquor at home.
“We are hoping and praying that the lockdown ends on May 3, without any further extension and that life returns to normal. Even some vegetable vendors have looted us by charging exorbitant prices,” he added while acknowledging that not all were bad and that there were some honest grocery vendors as well as Goa Dairy, Goa Bagayatdar that stuck to the original prices.
