PONDA: More than 6,000 migrant workers in Ponda Taluka have registered themselves online to travel to their native places.

This also includes some family members. The locals in taluka including sarpanchas expressed concern over the exodus of labourers.
Ponda MLA Ravi Naik and Marcaim MLA Sudin Dhavalikar also expressed worry that if the labourers go to their native place development work, house repairs including work on sewerage plant work would be affected.
The maximum labourers registered themselves are 1,969 from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Bihar 972 and Jharkhand 554. Besides these, labourers from Odisha, West Bengal, Karnataka and Maharashtra have registered themselves for travelling to their native place.
There are 19 panchayats in Ponda Taluka and maximum 1,000 registered with Usgao, 750 in Curti-Khandepar, 600 in Bandora, 623 in Bhoma, 600 in Bethki Khandola, Tivrem-Vargao 405, Kundaim 450, Marcaim 300, Shiroda 334, Borim 283 and 250 in Kavlem.
This figure is likely to increase and if these labourers go to their native place then the construction activities, house repairs of locals are likely to be affected.
Earlier, at the beginning of the lockdown, around 14,000 migrants had registered themselves with Deputy Collector for food and other facilities which were provided by the government, locals and NGOs.
