Ponda locals feel the pinch over rising vegetable prices

PONDA: Ponda locals felt the pinch as vegetable prices skyrocketed in the Ponda market, on Wednesday. 

Tomatoes were sold between Rs 70 and Rs 100 per kg while beans which were priced at Rs 120 per kg since past two months now are sold between Rs 160 and Rs 200 kg depending upon the quality.

The vegetable vendors said, “Due to unseasonal rain, vegetable crops were destroyed and thus due to short supply of vegetables, the rates have gone up.”

Fenugreek or methi, which is consumed mostly by the diabetic patients, is presently in short supply in the market, with single bunch which was sold at Rs 15, now almost reaching to Rs 30. The dry red chilli prices have also skyrocketed due to crop damage. It is sold at Rs 600, Rs 700, Rs 800 and Rs 1000 per kg depending upon the quality. The green chillies are sold between Rs 80 and Rs 100 per kg. 

But the prices of onion and potatoes are almost stable between Rs 30 and Rs 35 per kg respectively.
