PONDA: While on Sunday, the Kundaim villagers protested against the erection of a mobile tower in the vicinity of Government Primary School, their counterparts at Ponda took to the streets on Monday and opposed the setting up of a mobile tower near St Mary’s High School, here.
The locals vent their ire against the digging of the footpath located in the vicinity of the school in Upper Bazaar, Ponda and added that meddling with a public place meant for pedestrians was intolerable.
Labourers at the site could neither produce copies of the work order nor furnish permission obtained for digging of the road. They were then directed by the locals to stop the work and cover up the trenches.
A local Viraj Sapre said that they suddenly saw some labourers digging the footpath near the bus stop, opposite St Mary’s High School and stated that they were doing it at the behest of a mobile tower firm.
Custodio Dias said that setting up such a tower here would have a detrimental effect on the health of over 2,000 students studying at the school. The locals residing in and around the vicinity said the radiation emitted from such towers poses serious health hazards.
Others present said that they would oppose the tower at all costs and added that they had no connectivity issues here and there was no need for such additional towers in the area.
