PONDA: Over 100 employees of the Electricity Department, Ponda unit, under the banner ‘Electricity Employees Union-Goa, Ponda Taluka’ on Friday protested outside their office at Curti-Ponda demanding to resolve various demands.
The demonstration started at about 8.30 am and was withdrawn at about 11.30 am following assurances from officials to resolve their four demands. The demands include providing raincoats, monetary assistance to purchase hand tools, payment of contract workers on time and issuing pay slips.
“The department used to supply us raincoats by May 30. It becomes difficult to work outdoors without raincoats. Every year, the department used to give Rs 800 towards purchase of hand tools like gloves, pliers, etc, however, since the last three years, we haven’t been given this money,” informed Abel D’Silva, vice-president of the Electricity Employees Union, Goa.
“Our other demands include salaries of about 250 contract workers should be given on time. We were not issued pay slips and the reason was attributed to non-functioning of computers, etc. We have demanded that pay slips should be issued to us,” added D’Silva.
“Following anassurance from the officials, we decided to withdraw our demonstration, but if our demands are not met then we will bpelled to go on strike,” warned D’Silva.
