Ponda residents urge authorities to clear abandoned vehicles, call for auction

Locals demand that authorities clear prime spaces in the town, to create parking spaces and generate finances

PONDA: The Ponda-ites have highlighted the need to clear various abandoned and scrap vehicles occupying primes spaces in the town for long time.  Locals has demanded that the concerned authorities to conduct auction of the scrap vehicles at earliest which could generate revenue for the Ponda Municipality and additionally provide space for parking.

The vehicles have not only been abandoned in Ponda town City but also on highways. Some vehicles involved in accidents are dumped behind the municipal library building. According to locals, if these vehicles are cleared by police and municipality the spaces could be used for parking. An old PWD jeep has been abandoned at a prime location in the town. Additionally, there are old scrap vehicles abandoned by the roadside at Farmagudi. 

According to Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) Chairperson Ritesh Naik currently PMC faces lot of hardship in clearing the abandoned vehicles. He said files for conducting auctioning the scrap vehicles has already been sent to the Directorate of Municipal Administration and Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation (GSWMC) but so far no permission has been forthcoming from the authorities. He said PMC is in possession of its eight scrapped vehicles. He said if PMC gets permission from authorities to scrap vehicles it could generate revenue for development work. He said a valuation report of scrapped vehicles is a must from GSWMC. He said since February 2023 the file is pending for valuation and approval from GSWMC

Regarding vehicles abandoned behind municipal library building he said since those are involved in accidents the issue would be discussed with Minister Ravi Naik, Deputy Collector and Police officials.
