The hefty fines mandated under the amended Motor Vehicle Act have not deterred reckless motorists from violating the traffic norms.
The cases booked include driving under influence of alcohol 60, overspeeding 987, using a mobile phone while riding/driving 75 cases, dangerous driving 142 cases, riding scooters without a helmet 4,180 cases, licence suspended 1,110 cases, tinted glass violations 2,881, dangerous parking 3,912 cases, driving by minor without licence 18, driving by a person above 18 years of age 106 cases, besides there are other violations.
Ponda Traffic Cell Police Inspector Krishna Sinhari urged the people to follow traffic rules including wearing helmets and seat belts for their own safety.
The new Motor Vehicle Act is implemented in April 2022.
He said, “They are issuing fines to bring discipline among the vehicle riders/drivers. The vehicles parked in no-parking zones are locked and issued fines. There are 1,110 motorists facing driving licence suspension for a period of three months which are recommended to the RTO.”
PI Sinhari said that there was no imprisonment for alcohol cases but there are hefty fines imposed on them or have to face the court.
“In the case of Ponda town, there is major traffic congestion near Almeida High School in the morning and after school hours. However, the Traffic Police and barricades are deputed for smooth flow of traffic,” he added.
PI Sinhari said, “The Ponda Municipal Council should provide spaces in town so that the Traffic Police can mark them for parking. In the case of Ponda market, the parking space is marked for cars and bikes.”
