PONDA: To curb the rise in number of road mishaps in Ponda and Dharbandora Talukas, Ponda Traffic Police launched a campaign against traffic violators and collected Rs 1.13 crore in revenue through fines.
Most importantly, 1,143 licences have been sent to various traffic police offices for suspension out of which 211 licences registered under Ponda Traffic Cell have already been suspended.
Also in a first, the officials of Ponda Traffic Cell have taken stringent action against two minors who will not be getting the licences until 25 years of age.
Till April, 17,422 motorists have been penalised. Out of these 1,057 were for not wearing helmets, 1,737 were fined for driving rashly, 2,572 were penalised for parking their vehicles in dangerous manner, 49 were fined for driving under the influence of alcohol, 100 for not wearing their seatbelts, 30 for talking on their phones while driving, 2,952 for driving in no entry areas, 422 for driving without number plates and 2,043 faced action for using number plates with fancy font-styles.
“Parents should not allow their minor children to drive vehicle. If found, action will be taken against parents too. The roads in Ponda are full of sharp turns so parents should let their children drive or ride only after obtaining the licence,” said Ponda Traffic Cell’s Assistant Director Sandip Desai.
