PONDA: Minister for waste management Atanasio Monserrate has said the government plans to increase the capacity of the Ponda Municipal Council’s (PMC) waste treatment plant from 1.5 tonnes per day to 10 tonnes per day.
Monserrate, who visited the PMC’s waste disposal site at Kerya in Curti, Ponda, along with local MLA and agriculture minister Ravi Naik, said the treatment plant’s current processing capacity is unable to meet the 6.5 tonnes of wet waste generated on a daily basis in the municipality’s jurisdiction.
As a result, five tonnes of waste are sent from Ponda to the Saligao waste treatment plant instead, he said, and added that the issue will be resolved only once the Ponda plant’s capacity is increased.
“In the future, there is a plan to further increase the plant’s capacity to 20 tonnes per day considering the requirements going forward,” the minister said.
The Ponda plant presently treats wet waste generated by Ponda town as well as by the Curti panchayat area, according to directions from the high court of Bombay at Goa.
