PONDA: Pondaites on Tuesday expressed concern over the stagnant water accumulated at the three main public places in the Ponda Muncipal Council (PMC) jurisdiction, which they feel may become an ideal spot for mosquito breeding and pose threat of public health.

A Ponda local, Viraj Sapre said that the rain is not completely stopped yet and demanded either to conduct regular fogging, stop operation or dry the non-functional fountains with stagnant water to prevent health problems.
It may be recalled that the dengue cases were detected in some police personnel last year at Ponda Police Station while one girl also succumbed in the Curti Panchayat jurisdiction.
The stagnant water accumulation at the three main public places, include two non-functional fountains, one in front of Dada Vaidya Chowk statue in heart of town, which is close to the Ponda Police Station. Last year, 15 police personnel tested positive for the mosquito-borne infection, following which sanitary inspector has conducted fogging on the scrapped vehicles parked near the police station.
The locals said, “The non-functional fountain with stagnated water at Dada Vaidya Chowk should be inspected by the Health Department officials and stop its operation or dry it by removing the stagnant water. The Dada Vaidya statue is the identity of Ponda and located in heart of town and there is a large movement of people surrounding the statue.”
Besides this, there is Lotus Fountain at the entrance of Kranti Maidan and one well in the PMC garden. Children and elderly visit these public places and so there is a need to take proper care.
When asked the health official at Ponda Sub District Hospital about the issue, he said that he would immediately conduct inspection of these three places mentioned and take preventive steps including fogging.
