PONDA: A portion of the roof and wall of the Mount Carmel Chapel located in the heart of town near Ponda Police Station collapsed on Thursday.
The devotees rushed to the site after receiving the news of the incident. The chapel was built in 1782.
Fr Carlos Dias said, “The incident took place around 4 am. Time to time maintenance work has been carried out, however due to some leakages, some portions collapsed. The wall structure is made up of laterite stone, mud and lime, while some top portion is of mud.”
Large devotees thronged the site, and the Chapel authorities immediately started the wall and roof restoration by adopting safety measures to prevent further damage.
