Sanguem: The farmers in Sanguem and other nearby areas are a worried lot given the poor monsoon season so far. The irregular monsoon has severely affected agricultural activities and those involved in paddy cultivation are eagerly waiting for the monsoon to pick up in the next few days failing which the farmers fear a bad crop in the current season.
The dull monsoon has also severely affected the water level at the Selaulim Dam. The Selaulim dam usually overflows in the second week of July , however this year on account of the poor monsoons the water level at the dam has remained pretty low as of date.
Sources revealed that last year in the first week of July, the water level at the Selaulim Dam had reached 38.46 metres as against the present water level of 34.60 metres.
There is a shortfall of about 2.00 metres in the water level at the Selaulim Dam due to poor monsoon season.
Under the prevailing circumstances, the Selaulim dam is expected to over flow in the last week of August according to sources.
Moreover the water levels at the ‘Bhandaras’ is also very low and this has made the farmers ponder over the hard days that lie in store for them in the event the monsoon fails to improve.
On account of the poor monsoon, almost all the rivers and rivulets in Sanguem which otherwise would overflow in the second week of July have remained low as of date with no signs of overflowing atleast for the next few weeks.
