Poor response to Cong’s anti-govt rally

Cops stop rally near Sanjay School due to Section 144

PORVORIM: The rally staged by the Congress party at Porvorim on Monday to protest against functioning of the State Government evoked poor response, with a little over 200 people participating in the rally.
State Congress party President John Fernandes led the rally, while those who took part in the rally included former minister Manohar Azgaonkar, former deputy speaker Shambu Bandekar, Pratima Coutinho and general secretary Ulhas Parab.
The rally started from Dona Leonor Memorial High School (ACDIL) at Porvorim, and proceeded towards the Assembly complex at about 11.15 am. However, it was stopped near the Sanjay School by the police, as Section 144 is in force. Later, it converged into a meeting at Sanjay School.
Fernandes stated that the Congress party was forced to come on the streets after two years, as the State BJP government had failed to provide good governance to the people.
“Corruption has become rampant. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar himself admitted that corruption in prevalent in government departments. The State government is yet to prepare the Regional Plan, nor has been successful in handling garbage issue despite tall promises,” stated Fernandes.
“We will submit memorandum, each to the Governor and Speaker, listing 27 issues which the State government has failed to act,” said Fernandes.
Manohar Azgaonkar said: “The ministers are looting the State. Parrikar is not prepared to listen to the suggestions even from his cabinet colleagues and MLAs. The State government has failed to solve major issues like casinos, garbage, medium of instructions, unemployment, mining, etc. This government has no moral right to continue,” stated Azgaonkar.
General Secretary Ulhas Parab also spoke on the occasion.
