Poor response to MoI advisory panel meet

PANJIM: The advisory committee on the Medium of Instruction (MoI) met in Panjim on Friday, and drew a poor response from parents, but saw a demand for primary education in the mother tongue.

The committee, chaired Director of Higher Education Bhaskar Nayak held its public hearing for Tiswadi at Peoples High School, which was attended by nearly 60 parents representing Parents Teachers Association (PTA) from schools across the taluka.
Supporters of the mother tongue as MoI claimed that primary education should be imparted only in the mother tongue as it was a ‘universally accepted theory’ and, hence, the government should provide grants only to Konkani and Marathi medium primary schools. However, there was no discussion on discontinuing grants to English medium schools.
There were very few supporters of English medium schools, who opined that grants should continue to these schools as it is a government decision, accorded by the Cabinet. Another group demanded that the choice of MoI should be left to parents.
Parents also raised concerns over poor infrastructure in government primary and high schools and demanded that immediate steps be initiated for improving the structures as well as quality of education.
Ealier, the Committee had held meeting in Sattari, Bicholim, Pernem and Bardez. The next meeting is scheduled on October 15 at Quepem and on 21 at Ponda.
Appointed in July, the committee has to submit its report within 120 days.
