Portion of Panjim promenade on the verge of collapse

PANJIM: A stretch of Panjim promenade situated on the banks of Mandovi River has become hollow from beneath due to soil erosion and could collapse any time.

It came to light when the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) appointed workers on Friday were cleaning the main drains at the promenade near the Panjim market where it was seen that the stretch next to one of the main drains connecting to the Mandovi River has become hollow from beneath with soil erosion.

It appears that the laterite stones have washed off gradually over a period of time during the high tide and the promenade is now losing support from beneath as a result of which it might collapse at any moment.

It is posing a threat particularly to tourists, morning and evening walkers, who take the said promenade stretch daily.

CCP Deputy Mayor Sanjeev Naik said that top CCP officials have been asked to inspect the area and recommend to the Corporation about the measures to strengthen it and to prevent any untoward incident.

“We have learnt about this through our workers and also through mediapersons. Our officials and engineers have been told to visit the site and report to us about the measures that we need to take. CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate will be briefed about the situation and required measures will be taken by the Corporation,” Naik said.

He further said that if required, the CCP will write to the Water Resources Department (WRD) requesting them to assist in restoring the hollow part of the promenade.
