Portion of St Britto High School compound wall collapses due to heavy rain

MAPUSA: Following continues heavy rain for the last two days, a portion of the laterite compound wall of St Britto High School at Dattawadi, Mapusa, collapsed on Thursday afternoon. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

This is the second incident where the same wall has collapsed. Last year in July, a portion of the same wall had collapsed and staff of Electricity Department was injured in the incident.

Though there were no injuries reported this time, there are few coconut trees located right next to the collapsed wall which are now posing danger to people.

Meanwhile, Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Priya Mishal visited the site and informed that soon the work on the retaining wall will be taken up under Mapusa MLA’s fund. Mishal also informed that the fire and emergency service Mapusa were informed about the incident and also asked to take necessary steps to clear the coconut trees which are posing danger.

“After the last incident, the school was issued a notice to take up reconstruction of the complete wall but it is not done. There is no drainage on the inside of the school compound due to which, the rain water gets accumulated, which weakens the wall causing it to collapse,” MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal said.
