Margao City Fathers are preoccupied with the game of musical chairs. They fight on petty issues in the ongoing game of one-upmanship. In the bargain, they seemed to have completely forgotten that portraits of eminent personalities honoured by the Civic body over the years are gathering dust in the building passage.

MARGAO: As many as two Chairpersons have changed in the Margao civic body in the last seven months; however, portraits of eminent personalities continue to gather dust in the passage of the century-old municipal building. Portraits of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda, Cardinal Valerian Gracias, former Margao MLAs et al lie dumped in the passage when they ought to be displayed prominently in the august municipal hall.
Incumbent Municipal Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello has apparently not found time to find out why the portraits have not returned in the Municipal hall after their removal when the hall was being painted. His predecessor, Dayanand Deulkar, had promised to take steps to accord due respect to the eminent personalities, but before he could bring the portraits back in the hall, he had to make way for his successor to take over.
What’s surprising to note is that none of the chief officers took time to inspect the huge portraits lying dumped in the municipal passage adjoining the chairperson’s chamber. Says Councillor Pratima Coutinho, “It is indeed sad that the portraits are just lying dumped in the passage for over a year now. No decision has been taken to discard the portraits, but at the same time, there’s no action from the civic body to get them back in the Municipal hall.”
