PORVORIM: The residents of Pundalik Nagar, Porvorim are without water supply since Friday as the water pipeline was damaged while road-widening works were being carried out. To add to their misery, BSNL telephone cables were also damaged, due to which their phones were dead.
Since the Public Works Department (PWD) and BSNL allegedly did not attend to their grievances, the residents approached local MLA Rohan Khaunte, who immediately visited the site and ordered the contractor to stop the work until the matter was resolved. He also called PWD and BSNL officials to the site to discuss the issue.
“While labourers of the contractor were digging the road, the water pipeline and BSNL telephone cables got damaged. The telephone cable must be laid 50 cm below the ground, whereas here it was found to have been laid only 5 cm below the ground. The BSNL engineer has been advised to lay new cables and ensure that the telephone lines of the residents become operational at the earliest. The executive engineer of the PWD water supply division has been directed to repair the water pipeline and release water to the residents on priority,” said Khaunte.
PWD executive engineer (water supply) M Chavan, PWD executive engineer (roads) Brahmanand Naik and the BSNL engineer Pralhad Gudi were present at the site.
