Porvorim locals’ meet fizzles out without result

PORVORIM: The meeting called by Porvorim Residents Association (PRA) on Sunday to decide on the further course of action regarding the construction of new market project near Hanuman temple at Alto Betim ended without any decision being taken.

Speaking at the meeting, Harish Shiroi informed that in the meeting with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at the Secretariat on July 28, Parrikar had stated that the new market complex will come up as planned on the playground and there is a provision in the plan for a playground which will be developed by spending Rs 2 crore and that the residents who want to oppose the project are free to approach the court.
“Hence, it is to be decided whether we should go to the court or not and who is going to take the lead to collect required documents and discuss the matter with legal expert,” said Shiroi.
R L Naik said Nehrunagar Association has taken care of the playground all these years and the best thing will be to approach Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte and then decide further course of action.
Sunil Kavathankar said there should be unity among the residents. “I am prepared to go to the court, but it will get political colour since I am spokesperson of the Congress party. Further, there is no sufficient documentary evidence to prove that the area is an open space. It will be advisable if PRA approaches the court to oppose the project or launch agitation,” said Kavthankar.
Since the residents could not agree on the issue, the meeting ended without any decision being taken.
