PANJIM: Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte has knocked the doors of the High Court of Bombay at Goa seeking quashing of First Information Report (FIR) registered against him in connection with threatening a BJP office bearer last month.

The Bench on Monday issued notices on the police and the authorities concerned for a reply.

It may be recalled that in a wee-hour development on February 6, the Porvorim Police had arrested Khaunte based on a complaint filed by State BJP spokesman Premanand Mhambrey for allegedly threatening him in the premises of the Goa Legislative Assembly.

He was released within an hour, but the incident was widely condemned by the United Opposition who demanded the arrest of Mhambrey for the “false complaint”.

Khaunte has now moved the High Court seeking to quash the FIR under Section 341 (Wrongful Restraint) and 323 (Voluntarily Causing Hurt) of Indian Penal Code registered against him.

The police have been asked to file their reply within three weeks. Khaunte has alleged that BJP-led government misused police machinery to arrest him on the “fake case”.
