MAPUSA: Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said it was a sad state of affairs that the government was unable to provide the people with adequate and portable water.
He added that people are frustrated and angry with the government for the inconvenience caused to them given that, parts of Bardez have been suffering from a water crisis for the last four days.
“There was a need for the government to address the issues of the common man and find a solution,” said Khaunte. He also pointed out that despite the State having received so much of rainfall, water is not stored appropriately and is allowed to flow into the sea.
“Surprisingly in spite of heavy monsoons, we are facing shortage. There is rain but no water to drink. It’s questionable that the level Amthane dam is going down so soon, despite the State receiving excess rainfall. If this is the plight now the people will have a lot of problems in the summer,” added Khaunte.
He also lamented that it is only October and still people are facing water shortage.
“Earlier in July also there were water issues. At Assonora, either the pump is breaking down, no raw water or electricity issues,” said Khaunte.
He added that as per the PWD department, the issue at the Assonora Water Treatment plant has added an additional pump.
“Shortage of water is still being witnessed in some parts of Porvorim. There is an issue with the supply of raw water to Assonora from the Amthane dam. WIth regards to Tillari dam, there is an issue of turbidity in the water. The engineers concerned, need to take the required steps. This is nothing but failure of the government and its machinery to keep basic amenities in proper functioning. The basic and fundamental rights of every citizen in the State are not being catered to,” added Khaunte.
He also criticised the government for not providing basic amenities to the public, such as water, electricity and roads. “There is no proper planning and the Chief Minister should take keen interest in the issues affecting the common man,” quipped Khaunte.
“Goas cannot be fighting for water, electricity, roads, time and again. There is a need for proper planning and if the minister handling a portfolio is new, the bureaucracy should guide them,” added Khaunte.
