Porvorim women demand justice, seek action against PI, constable

March to District Police Headquarters; Say it is shocking that SP North and DySP have ‘abandoned’ their offices

PORVORIM:  A group of women from Porvorim on Wednesday marched to the District Police Headquarters seeking to know what action has been taken against Porvorim PI and constable with regards to their complaint with the Superintendent of Police (North) for allegedly assaulting them during protest outside PWD office last week.

The women demanded justice as the State commemorated Elimination of Violence Against Women Day on Wednesday.

The women found that the SP North Utkrisht Prasoon and DySP Edwin Colaco were not available.

It may be recalled that the women had lodged a formal complaint with SP against Povorim PI Ninad Deulkar and another male constable for assaulting them.

“It is shocking that senior officers have “abandoned” their offices, leaving the locals in difficult situation. The women had led the morcha in a very peaceful manner as they were frustrated over the irregular water supply. However, the male policemen who were standing behind hit the women with lathis. The attack was without any provocation,” claimed Marina Moraes, Chairperson of Self Help Group Federation.

Moraes said the women of Porvorim want to know what action has been taken against the PI and the constable. Police cannot assault those who had gone there asking for basic needs. On International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women, it is a matter of grave concern that women have to protest against police violence.

Another woman, Kalpana Morajkar, who was part of the group, said, “The Porvorim locals have been facing acute water shortage. Local MLA Rohan Khaunte has been helping out by providing water tanker to the people. But how long can anyone survive on such arrangement. We had gone to the PWD asking for basic amenity.”

Morajkar demanded that the action should be taken against Deulkar and the constable to ensure that women in the area feel safe.
