Postal stamp sought on St Joseph Vaz, Sohirobanath

PANJIM: Post Master General of Goa Charles Lobo on Saturday appealed to the State government to have postal stamp on St Joseph Vaz and great Goan spiritual visionary and saint Sohirobanath Ambiye, sending a strong signal that Goa is a State where communal harmony resides.

The “Government should try to bring out a joint issue Sohirobanath Ambiye and St Joseph Vaz stamp. This will send a good signal to the whole world that Goa is a State where communal harmony exists,” Lobo said in the presence of Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar.
Lobo said this attains importance because the two were almost contemporaries in the 17-18th century and preached devotion to God. “This will put two other sons of this holy land of Govapuri on the philatelic map of the world,” he said.
The Post Master also urged the government to release a special cover to commemorate the sacrifices of the martyrs, who lost their lives during the ‘Jallianwalha bagh of Goa’ on September 21, 1890. This year is the 125th anniversary of the incident.
A total of 23 people were killed in front of Margao church for demanding free and fair democratic election. The fight was led by Dr Jose Inacio de Loyola founder of Partido Indiano, the first political party of Goa.
