PANJIM: The Congress on Tuesday demanded revocation of circular issued by the Education department, directing the schools to organise “Celebration of 70th Anniversary of the adoption of our Constitution” on January 16, as the same coincides with Feast of St Joseph Vaz.
In a press statement issued, Congress spokesperson Trajano D’Mello said that the issuing of a circular to schools intimating the organising of “Celebration of 70th anniversary of the adoption of our Constitution” and urging to make it convenient to attend the same without fail exposes the dictatorial attitude of the Director Education Vandana Rao.
He said that if the department had consulted the institutional heads, before issuing the circular, they would have been informed of the great feast of St Joseph Vaz.
“The CM was pleased to understand the sentiments and reverence of the first Goan saint St Joseph Vaz, who is also the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Goa and declare January 16 as a restricted holiday,” he said.
D’Mello also accused Rao of disrespecting the chief minister by fixing January 16, which has been notified as a restricted holiday, for celebrating the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution.
“Therefore, we demand that the CM intervene and postpone the programme for another date as every Catholic Head would like to participate in the Adoption of the Constitution Day as the same is scared to every Indian Catholic,” he said.
