MARGAO: A large group of taxi operators from Benaulim constituency during their meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in Panjim on Tuesday, appealed for postponing the installation of the speed governors by a year.
The Chief Minister assured to look into the matter. The group was informed that the State government had already received the previous memorandum on the issue and that a note had already been issued by the Chief Minister prior to the enforcement of the prevailing Election Code Of conduct.
Demanding that the implementation of the rule to install speed governors be postponed by a year, the taxi operators said that they had recently highlighted various defects with the speed governors and the issues with the private company that had procured them.
With regards to their second demand seeking relaxation on obtaining fitness certificates, they pointed out that the Exposition of St Francis Xavier will take place later this year, for which there will be a huge demand for taxis.
The taxi operators lamented that if they have to obtain new fitness certificates, they would have to do so by August or September, and there would be a huge rush for the same, which could result in a situation where would be no enough taxis available for the expected tourists arriving during the Exposition.
Stating that installing speed governors is not the solution, the taxi operators said that they have asked the Chief Minister to get the Attorney General (AG) of Goa to convey the same to the court and to propose other solutions like more speed breakers, AI cameras, speed control checking units, traffic signals, etc.
