MARGAO: A fresh row has hit the Margao Municipal Council with the opposition eight-member group headed by outgoing Chairperson Arthur D’Silva demanding postponement of the special meeting of the council convened on September 30 to discuss special status for Goa.
The council has called for the special meeting to discuss the special status for Goa as per the correspondence received from the Director of Municipal Administration.
The eight-member group, however, has asked for postponement of the meeting on grounds that election for the post of MMC Chairperson is fixed on October 4 and that it’s not fair to hold a meeting of the council just four days before the polls. “When the DMA has fixed election for the vacant post of Chairperson, it’s not fair to hold a special meeting. We have requested the Chief Officer to postpone the meeting in view of the election. We have no objection to the meeting nor are we opposed to special status. It can be held after the election on October 4,” informed Arthur.
Taking no chances, Chief Officer Deepali Naik has forwarded the representation received from the eight-member group to the DMA for an appropriate decision. “I have faxed the representation to the DMA for advise and opinion,” the CO informed.
Sources in the know said that DMA Elvis Gomes will take a final call on the representation received from the opposition councillors.
