Poultry farmers ‘violating’ ban on chicken sale

PANJIM: A Goan citizen has alleged that despite ban on the import and sale of chicken due to fear of bird flu, some poultry farmers are blatantly violating the government order.

An email complaint sent to Chief Ministers and both district collectors, Sagar Badakhere has requested the authorities to take urgent steps to curb the menace.

“It is noticed that large poultry farmers are based in Goa but have all their farms in Karnataka and are blatantly bringing birds into Goa and selling them in Goa even as of this morning via their own outlets or otherwise, despite the prohibitory orders issued by the Collectors thereby endangering the lives of the residents of the state of Goa,” reads an extract of his email complaint.

In his email, copy of which is also sent to Chief Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services and some media houses, the local also requested to make the public aware of the threat of bird flu which if combined with the COVID-19 pandemic will be fatal to the residents of Goa.

As per the order of the district magistrates last week, transportation and entry of birds from Karnataka and Kerala into Goa, directly or indirectly, has been prohibited till further orders. The district administration has also warned of action against the violators under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
