PANJIM: Poultry traders across Goa are calling for the establishment of associations at the taluka level to represent their interests. They believe that such associations could play a crucial role in setting industry standards, promoting ethical business practices, and enhancing transparency in the poultry trade.
Speaking to the media, poultry owners expressed their concern over the current disorganised state of the industry in Goa. They emphasized the necessity for unity among the owners to address this issue. According to them, the lack of a structured framework results in the absence of standardised chicken prices in the region.
The traders argued that forming associations would not only help address their grievances but also enable them to respond effectively to allegations made against the industry. Additionally, they believe that this move could distinguish legitimate poultry businesses in Goa.
Prisco Sequeira, President of the All-Goa Poultry Shopkeepers’ Association, highlighted their past efforts, stating, “Since 1994, we have undertaken movements, visiting around 800 shops in Goa, and have made four attempts to form a group. However, not everyone is willing to join, and those who do, withdraw when we establish standardised rates.”
“The formation of an organised association has the potential to streamline operations, establish a fair competition framework, and contribute to the overall growth and sustainability of the poultry sector in Goa,” he added.
He further pointed out the importance of scientifically managing chicken waste and garbage generated from poultry shops. Sequeira added that they have appealed to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for land to address this waste management issue.
