MAPUSA: The Electricity Department has asked the national highway contractor to stop the work of laying 33 kv underground power cables from Porvorim to Colvale during the monsoon season and asked to follow proper methods while laying the cables.
The highway contractor had dug a stretch of road from Tar Bridge towards Green Park side in the last few days in order to lay 33 kv underground power cables from Colvale to Porvorim as a part of national highway road widening work. However, the work was carried not as per the norms laid down by the Electricity Department.
With continuous rains, the dug stretch was filled with water, which the department claimed is not as per the method to be followed while laying underground power cables. For power cable laying the stretch should have depth and needs presence of sand besides protective cover bricks and other material, it stated.
Further, during the inspection conducted by the Electricity Department, it was found that the work executed was not as per the norms laid down by the department and also while laying underground power cable, material like sand which is used as protective cover was not found.
The Electricity Department has also written a letter to national highway contractors asking them to have joint inspection with the concerned Electricity Department officials and to execute the work in dry and sunny conditions.
