BICHOLIM: A spark of joy flashed on the faces of Falkar family members when their house got illuminated with light after more than 50 years.
“More than 50 years of darkness have at last vanished. We are really thankful to all those who helped us, including Herald, and other media,” said a beaming Ashok Falkar today when Herald visited the family at New wada Pilgao in Bicholim taluka.
The Falkar family was in the limelight when Herald had highlighted their plight and how they were made to live without electricity for more than 50 years. Ashok Falkar, 59, and his wife Anita, 55, along with their three children, were made to run from pillar to post seeking for even just a temporary electricity connection so that their daughter, who is in the SSC, could study for her exams.
After Herald published the news, several samaritans had visited the house and the Rotary Club of Margao Midtown had installed a solar panel that brightened the house. For the first time today the Falkars received electricity connection that brightened the entire house.
“We are happy like never before. Our efforts have paid off and we are thankful to all those who showed empathy towards us and helped us,” says Ashok.
Ashok tried his best to obtain an electricity connection but every time someone or the other objected because of some personal rivalry.
Ashok has two daughters and a son, all who are studying in Pilgao. While the eldest daughter Anisha is in SSC, the second daughter Pratibha is in Class VII while the son Manohar is still in the primary.
The electricity has come as a blessing in disguise for Anisha who began answering her SSC exams on April 1.
“We will now be able to study like others even during night time and are very happy and excited,” said Anisha who is the middle of her exams.
