PANJIM: Minister for Power Ramakrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar on Tuesday justified the government’s decision to hike the power tariff stating that the revenue generated will be utilised for streetlight maintenance.
The State government last week hiked the power tariffs by 5 p to 8 p per unit for low — and high-tension consumers, including for domestic, commercial, industrial, agriculture and others, as “public lighting duty”.
Speaking to media persons, Dhavalikar said that to maintain street lighting, the power tariff has been increased and accordingly the same will help in streamlining it.
“The revenue accrued from the power tariff hike will go towards maintenance of streetlights,” he said adding that the decision is in view of the new streetlight policy which has been implemented from June 1.
The Minister justified that the power hike for domestic consumers is only 5 paise per unit while the more burden put on industries and HTL consumers who will pay an additional 6 to 8 paise per unit.
