PANJIM: Goa State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday congratulated Bollywood’s most famous villain Pran for receiving the highest award in Indian cinema,~the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for cinematic excellence.
St Andre MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh while moving the congratulatory motion in the House said that ‘it is a proud movement for India cinema as for the first time in the history, a villain has been bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award’.
Speaking about his film career, Wagh said that Pran, considered as one of the most versatile actors in Hindi films, joined the industry to become a hero but ended up playing one of the best villains.
Pran was easily Bollywood’s first-choice villain from the 1950s to the 1980s, he said adding ‘he played a hapless father who turns to crime in “Amar Akbar Anthony” and the affable gangster in “Zanjeer”.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Leader of Opposition Pratapsing Rane supporting the motion hailed Pran, for his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema.
Parrikar said “I never thought that one day I will congratulate the person whom I saw as a villain on TV since my childhood. He was a great person and a gentleman,” he added.
