MARGAO: Margao Municipal Councillor Pratima Coutinho was yet again elected as chairperson of the Margao Municipal Market panel on Friday. Soon after, she promised clean toilets and market passages free from encroachments.
As expected, Pratima defeated councillor Rosy Pereira by 14-6 votes to return back as Chairperson of the MMC Market Committee. After her election, Pratima said the 14 ruling councillors had rallied behind her since she had done justice to the job during her previous stint. “Not only people of Margao, but Goans had seen my work as Chairperson of the market panel before I stepped down from the post to honour my commitment. I had decided to contest the post after the 14 ruling councillors kept telling me time and again to head the market panel”, she said.
Pratima took pot shots at her predecessor Berta Cardozo, accusing her for doing nothing to clear the markets of encroachments. “During the last seven months, there’s been a rise in encroachments and illegalities in the market”, she alleged. Cardozo, however, has refuted her allegation, saying that she had given her best to keep the market free from encroachments. “Unlike Pratima, who used to move in the market with the media for publicity, I used to visit the market with my market inspectors”,
Cardozo said.
